The introduction of English to the Indian subcontinent has profoundly transformed various aspects of Indian life. Colonial dynamics have been shaped by Western language, culture, and education, leaving a lasting impact on regional languages and cultures. In Karnataka, these changes were reflected in the responses of local litterateurs to Western movements during notable phases in Kannada literature, such as Navya, Navodaya, and Bandaya. The transformative role of English in culture has been amply found in different walks of life of Kannadigas.
The presence of English has significantly influenced Kannadigas, who often navigate the balance between their native language and English in professional contexts. Looking at English language from the vantage point of indigeneity may lead to the unravelling of the hitherto unknown things. This conference, tentatively scheduled for the third or fourth week of November 2024, aims to explore these themes through theoretical insights and practical experiences from Kannadigas of diverse backgrounds.
